Profile

August Abraham Johannes Abrahamsson was born in Dragsfjärd, Finland on 15 July 1892. The son of Anton Abrahamsson (18949-1913) and Klara Vilhelmina Vendenberg (1852-1904)  and with two known siblings, Anton and Aina.

He boarded Titanic at Southampton, travelling to New Jersey, where his brother Anton resided. He was accompanied by Eino Lindqvist and Helga and Hilda Hirvonen and he shared a cabin with five further Finnish men.

At the time of the collision he was in his cabin and had no intention of going uptop to investigate.  Another cabin mate did leave to investigate and when he did not return August became anxious. As he realised the ship was listing he returned below to find Eino. After he had done this he returned to his own cabin to fetch his lifeboat only to find seawater inundating that section of the ship.

He managed to get back to the Boat Deck and escaped on one of the last lifeboats, most likely no. 15.

Upon arrival in New York he recuperated in St. Vincent Hospital before returning to Finland, but he got married in 1914 and returned to America. August and his wife Martha settled in Brooklyn, New York and had no children. August passed away in 1961 and his wife in 1978. They were buried in Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn.
