2022 Christmas Film World Cup: Last 16

Updated: Dec 18, 2022

The Group Stages are at an end and now we are down to straight knock out matches. We will preview the matches here and each match will be open for voting on the correct day on this page. The Twitter match up scores will be added to the totals at the close of the day. If scores are equal at the close of play, penalties will be used to confirm the winner.

14th December

Last 16 Match 1

Vince Vaughan and Reece Witherspoon made it this far in 2018 only to be sent home by Gremlins while The Holiday has been here twice, in 2010 and 2018. One of these two will be achieving their best performance regardless. Four Christmases achieved an astonishing result in the group by coming out on top and The Holiday managed to take second spot behind Last Christmas.

The Holiday

57%

Four Christmases

43%

Four Christmases have been undone by the foursome of The Holiday, it was a close run thing but the winter draped romance of the Cotswolds has triumphed. They now need to prepare to take on Macaulay Culkin and Joe Pesci in the quarter final as they have finally made it through the Last 16 stage and into the heights of the last 8!

Last 16 Match 2

Little Kevin Macalister amassed a considerable points haul to romp home at the top of Group C. The 2018 runner up was previously knocked out at the quarter final stage by Scrooged in 2010 and then Elf in 2014. Trading Places came through Group D in the shadow of Die Hard. The early 80s camper has been eliminated at this stage on each occasion, in 2014 it was Home Alone that sent them packing.

Home Alone is a strong favourite to succeed here and is probably the favourite for this part of the draw.

The final result is in:

Home Alone

71%

Trading Places

29%

A convincing victory for Home Alone who see off the 80s comedy romp with an impressive margin. The Holiday awaits in the quarter final.

15th December

Last 16 Match 3

The Will Ferrell machine is garnering plenty of support this year, the two times semi finalist was subject to a shock last time out when he was dumped out at the Last 16 by Muppets Christmas Carol. He must fancy his chances against horror schlock Krampus. Toni Collette and her crew had to overcome stiff competition in their group, seeing off second seed Nightmare before Christmas and the impressive challenger The Tomorrow War to take second place in a close run thing. This is only their second outing and already they have improved on group stage elimination in 2018. Can the Elf be put on the shelf by the thing that goes bump in the night?

There is a great deal of buzz about Elf but Krampus has already seen off a second seed and Elf suffered a shock at this stage last time out. This one shall be watched with interest.

Elf

67%

Krampus

33%

Comfortable for Elf who marches on to a quarter final against the Gremlins

Last 16 Match 4

Another big contrast in styles coming head to head in this Last 16 match. Gremlins have reached the quarter final twice and the semi final last time out and the much loved Snowman has made the quarters three times on the trot. One of these big hitters is going home earlier than ever before in this elimination showdown. What is going to emerge victorious? The direct emotive heart string turn filled with charm and pathos or the tongue in cheek monster flick with shocks and hard hits.

Tough to call this one, it will all be about which team turns up

Gremlins

70%

The Snowman

30%

The pesky critters didn't need to wait for midnight to get fed, they made short work of the Snowman and progress to a quarter final show down with Will Ferrell.

16th December

Last 16 Match 5

The media hype over this one is immense, the broadcasters pick of the round is the London Set Derby. The young pretender Last Christmas put down a defiant marker in the group stages, more than justifying the wild card seeding for the Mother of Dragons. A classy mix of classic style with emotive twists makes this a veritable instant classic and Love Actually will need to be sure of their game. The ensemble behemoth has already had a warning shot across the bows by being pushed into second place in the group and is now on a collision course with defending champion Die Hard in the quarter finals if both matches go to form.

This is clearly the glamour tie of the round and we will know just how strong the Last Christmas crew is after their showing in this battle. Love Actually has never been homeward bound before the Quarter Finals and will want to maintain that fine run of form.

Last Christmas

53.5%

Love Actually

46.5%

It was billed as the tie of the round and it did not disappoint. One of the greatest ensemble teams and a relentless popular favourite for the crown has been taken out by fresh faced recent arrival Last Christmas. The vote was tipped in favour of the newcomer by the twitter results.

Last 16 Match 6

These two have never faced off against each other and the difference in styles will be fascinating to watch. Die Hard, the "Brazil" of the Christmas Film World Cup world have never packed their bags before the final in past three competitions and have no intention of being unseated by puppets. The much loved Muppets have flattered to deceive with two Last 16 defeats before they finally broke the hoodoo in 2018 with a shock victory over Elf before being dismissed by Scrooged in the quarter finals. They can deliver a shock, but will it be enough to intimidate John MaClane?

The Friday matches this year are a feast of festive fun and from the two match ups we are going to lose two well fancied teams. Die Hard is a Goliath, but the Muppets have slain giants before.

Die Hard

63.5%

Muppets Christmas Carol

36.5%

Die Hard did not falter in the face of a potential banana skin and in the end comfortably put the Muppets the bed.

17th December

Last 16 Match 7

The Saturday matches may have a feel of "After the Mayor's show" about them after the glamour of the Friday fixtures but this is an intriguing affair that has not been seen before. Jingle All The Way has grown in stature over the course of the 12 year history of this event, from Group Stage also rans in 2010 to Last 16 defeat to Gremlins in 2014 and then quarter final elimination at the hands of those same critters four years later. In order to continue that trend they will need to overcome the mighty Bill Murray Scrooged. The Christmas Carol is a well represented formation in the finals and has taken some impressive scalps over the competition history. Responsible for sending Home Alone, Love Actually and The Grinch home twice each and even taking the crown in victory over Die Hard in 2010.

Somebody is gong to be disappointed and we suspect it is Arnie who will be grimacing after this is over.

Scrooged

87.5%

Jingle All The Way

12.5%

Bill Murray put Arnie to the sword in efficient fashion. The Austrian American grimaced that he would be back in post match interviews. Bill exclaimed he came, he saw, he kicked his ass and went to party with his team.

Last 16 Match 8

The final tie of the Last 16 matches is the lowly Brit Flick Get Santa against former champion and classic all star It's A Wonderful Life. Get Santa has had the longest journey in this tournament, after a poor show in the group stages in 2018 they have had to struggle through pre-qualifying and finishing 5th to snatch a fourth seed place. Then after being dismissed as group stage fodder they have managed to out manoeuvre The Polar Express and Klaus to head into the knockout stages. Wonderful Life suffered a Last 16 elimination by Love Actually last time out after winning in 2014 and a quarter finalist in 2010, surely there is no shock coming here this year?

We all love a fairy tale but one of the great classic fairy tales should put an end to the plucky British effort here.

It's A Wonderful Life

75%

Get Santa

25%

This was actually a painfully close match and Get Santa can be proud of what has been achieved. The web page poll held at 50% tie and it was he handful of voters on twitter that swung the match to the former champion.
